Have you ever felt judged by another entrepreneur?
Maybe it was a therapist in your town charging a fee that felt unreasonably high—or someone offering a sliding scale so low you couldn’t imagine how they stayed afloat. Maybe you saw another clinician publish a book and wondered how they pulled it off. Or maybe you did some quick math on a Zoom training full of attendees and felt that familiar pang of jealousy.
Comparison is a common experience in entrepreneurship—and an incredibly human one.
Sometimes it motivates and inspires us. But more often, it leaves us feeling small, stuck, and disconnected from our own unique path.
That’s why one of the very first conversations we have in The Business of Therapy course is this:
This is not a competitive space.
We don’t believe in scarcity here. We believe in the brilliance of uniqueness—that no two visions are the same, and that the world is better when everyone brings their distinct gifts forward.
After four years of running this course, here’s what we’ve seen:
Some participants are starting a private practice. Others are expanding. Some are launching trainings, podcasts, books, or group models. Some are selling products. And in all that time, we have never seen two people with the exact same dream.
Why? Because no one else sees the world exactly as you do.
You have your own lived experience. Your own combination of skills and stories. Your own nervous system. Your own way of connecting. Your own heart.
And that’s what the world needs—not a copy of someone else’s success, but your unique expression of service.
In a powerful post, Lisa Dion shared:
“Each of us with our own perspective and our own story. Neither more right or wrong, just different. And yet we judge… Just as we cannot fully see what ‘other’ sees, ‘other’ cannot fully see what we see… Think of how many stories would never be told, how many colors would never be seen, and how much meaning would be lost. Make space for ‘other’ to be as they are… so we can see and honor each other, no matter how differently we see the world.”
When fear shows up, so does judgment. We stop seeing other people’s creativity as inspiring and start seeing it as threatening. We believe the lie that “there’s not enough”—not enough clients, not enough ideas, not enough space for our dreams.
In The Business of Therapy, we practice a new way.
We regulate our nervous systems so we can stay connected to our own truth.
We practice honoring our story, our vision, and our way of working.
We build not from fear, but from purpose.
And when that happens—everyone benefits.
Just Look at What’s Been Created:
💡 Maria Diego had a vision: a training at Disneyland.
She didn’t let the crowded calendar stop her. She created a playful, creative space where therapists could learn, grow, and enjoy time in the parks—complete with Inside Out-themed ads and a unique blend of joy and learning.
💡 Cary Hamilton and Katie Accola lived in the same state and have been building separate visions for the past few years. Last year, they combined their strengths and visions to create a new play therapy office (an expansion of Cary’s successful group practice) with new recreational therapy (an expansion of Katie’s strengths in direct care). Their new space is not only gorgeous, but allows them each to do what they do best.
💡 Leilani Mason had a vision: to build a group practice in her rural community. Instead of focusing on the challenges (like how to find clinicians), she focused on her values and the services she wanted to provide. In the past three years, she’s grown her team (and her income!). It’s a big-time win for a small town.
There is room for your dream, too. Your training. Your writing. Your retreat, your course, your model of care.
You are not too late. Your idea is not already taken. You are not the only one who doesn’t have it all figured out. You are right on time.
